Piano Tuning Service Area

Dad’s Piano Tuning is centrally located in Lafayette, TN. Our primary service area includes everywhere south of Bowling Green, KY, north of Murfreesboro, TN, east of Nashville, TN, and west of Cookeville, TN.

So, if you live in middle Tennessee (or, Southern Kentucky) and you have a piano, it’s important to keep it tuned. That’s because changes in our climate can cause the pitch of the strings to change, affecting the sound of the instrument. Additionally, pianos are designed to stay in tune. If a piano is allowed to go out of tune for very long it can have negative results on the mechanical integrity of the piano and could be expensive to repair.

Having your piano tuned every 4-6 months is similar to having the oil changed in your car. It is essential to maintaining a working and beautiful sounding piano for the long term.

A professional piano tuner will have the tools and expertise to get your piano sounding its best. They will also be able to check for any damage that might have occurred over time and make any necessary preventative maintenance repairs.

What is
Piano Tuning?

Tuning a piano in middle Tennessee

In order to make a piano sound its best, it needs to be tuned regularly. Piano tuning is the process of adjusting the tension on the strings of the piano so that they are in tune with each other. When a piano is out of tune, it can be difficult to play and may sound “muddy”, “twangy”, “loud”, “jangly”or “off-key”.

A properly tuned piano will sound clear and consistent from note to note and will be much easier to play. In order to ensure that your piano is always in tune, it is recommended that you have it tuned two to three times a year.

We understand that your piano is a valuable investment, and we take great care to treat it with the respect it deserves. If you are looking for a reliable, professional piano tuning service in the Central Tennessee or Southern Kentucky area, look no further than Dad’s Piano Tuning. Call now to schedule an appointment!

What's Included?

in a Standard Piano Tuning Visit?

On any standard visit I will perform and/or assess the following:

Stellar Piano Tuning

Just like any complex machine your piano needs to be adjusted regularly to sound its best. Regular tuning of your piano will make it sound better and will help your piano maintain its value over time. At Dad’s Piano Tuning we help keep your piano sounding and operating at its best.

Preliminary Piano Cleaning

Pianos are beautiful instruments but they can get dirty over time. Our piano tuners perform a cleaning assessment when your piano is being tuned. Please note, a thorough piano cleaning may cost extra.

Assess Regulation

Regulation is the process of adjusting screws, springs, and levels inside the piano so that the ‘touch’ or ‘feel’ of playing the instrument is like ‘butter’ instead of ‘molasses’. We will assess the overall state of your piano, including key, action, hammer, and pedal regulation. Actual piano regulation prices vary.

Minor Piano Repairs

Certain minor repairs, such as a sticky key, or a squeaky pedal may be repairable during the piano tuning process. However, major repairs may require additional costs as well as a separate service call. Ask your piano technician for more details.

Assess Piano Condition

Sometimes your piano might need more than just a minor repair. Our experts will assess your piano's overall condition, from the pedals to the keys. We will provide you with information and estimates to make your piano look and sound new.

Piano Tuning Guarantee

We want you to be completely satisfied with our work. We guarantee that our expert piano technicians will leave you completely satisfied with your piano tuning service, or we will make it right. Give us a call or contact us to learn more.

Piano Tuning FAQs

The cost of having your piano tuned professionally can vary depending on a number of factors, including how long since the last piano tuning, how often the piano is used, the condition of the piano being tuned, the temperature and humidity variables at the location of the piano, and the level of service required. However, most tuning services range between $175 and $350 per tuning.

Yes, most pianos can be tuned regardless of their age. However, the cost of tuning an older piano that hasn’t been serviced in a while may be higher than the cost of tuning a newer piano, as the technician may need to spend more time on the job. This is another great reason to keep your piano maintained on a regular schedule. It is more expensive to tune a piano once a year than it is to tune it 3 times a year! That is because a well-maintained piano is easier to tune and requires less energy and time per tuning to have it sounding its best!

No. Unlike tuning a guitar or other stringed instrument, learning the skills required to successfully tune a piano requires the experience of tuning hundreds or thousands of DIFFERENT pianos before you get the hang of it. A professional technician has the experience and equipment necessary to ensure that your piano is accurately tuned. That being said, there was a time when I did NOT know how to tune a piano and I managed to figure it out. So it IS possible with time and the correct guidance. If you are interested in learning to tune pianos on your own, feel free to send me an email or call and I will be happy to point you in the right direction for resources and mentorship.

Yes! A piano should be tuned NO LESS than twice a year, but 3-4 times a year is better for the longevity and stability of the instrument. Other factors such as hours per week played, climate considerations, and the piano’s condition are considered but ALL pianos require regular maintenance and tuning to stay functional and healthy.

Yes, a piano can be tuned even after 20 years. However, the cost of tuning an older piano may be higher than the cost of tuning a newer piano, as the technician may need to spend more time on the job. Older pianos that have fallen out of maintenance may need repairs before they can be tuned. Dad’s Piano Tuning will assess if the piano can be tuned and will help you come up with a plan to either repair or replace your piano as needed.

One of the most important factors is to verify that they are members of the Piano Technicians Guild (PTG). I am a proud member of the Nashville Chapter of the PTG (#372) and I believe that the resources, training, and accountability a PTG membership provides are invaluable both to technicians and customers.

A tuner/technician who is a registered PTG member has expressed their desire to become a better technician over time as well as subjecting themselves to the code of honor and integrity required by the guild.

Anyone can buy piano tuning tools from Amazon and watch a few youtube videos, but it takes a lifetime of dedication to the craft to become a truly excellent piano tuner and technician.

As with any specialized service, tipping is appreciated but not expected or required. The amount you tip your piano tuner is up to you.

There are a number of factors that can cause a piano to go out of tune, including changes in temperature and humidity, wear and tear, and incorrect tuning. What’s more, a perfectly tuned piano placed in a perfect temp/humidity-controlled environment will still go out of tune over time because of physics.

If tension (i.e. tuning) is not maintained consistently, the piano can actually tear itself apart over time. Piano tuning is an important part of maintaining your instrument. In order to ensure the best possible tone and playability, it is necessary to address the effects of heat and humidity.

Additionally, when your piano tuner is seeing your piano every 4-6 months, they can catch potentially serious issues and address them while tuning before they become a costly separate repair.
